Gelendzhik is one of the most popular resorts on Russia’s Black Sea coast, tucked around a near-enclosed bay in the Krasnodar region and sheltered by mountains on three sides. That ring of hills gives it a mild microclimate and calm water, and together with a huge choice of beaches it has made the town a favourite family seaside destination — the self-styled “pearl” of this coast.
A Long History
People have lived on this bay since antiquity — Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and the local Adyghe all passed through, and finds here date back to the sixth century BCE. The modern town grew from a Russian fort established in 1831, at the close of the Caucasian War.
The Sights
Gelendzhik packs in a lot for an easy holiday, from more than a hundred equipped beaches to diving, rafting, jeep tours and paragliding. These are the highlights:
1. Safari Park. One of the largest zoos in Russia, home to well over a thousand animals on a wooded hillside, reached by its own cable car.
2. The Cable Cars. Several cableways climb the ridges above town for a bird’s-eye view over the bay and the mountains — the classic Gelendzhik photograph.
3. The Promenade. Gelendzhik’s seafront, at around 14 kilometres, is said to be one of the longest promenades in the world, and strolling it is the town’s favourite pastime.
4. The Lighthouse. The little Gelendzhik lighthouse, built in 1897, is one of the oldest on the Black Sea coast and a much-loved landmark at the end of the promenade.
5. The Valley of Charms. A pretty gorge just outside town, with relict plants, rock pools and small waterfalls — an easy escape into nature.

Getting There — the Honest Part
There is an added complication in this corner of Russia: the airports at Gelendzhik, Anapa and Rostov-on-Don have been suspended since 2022, and as of 2026 the nearest operating airport on the coast is Sochi (AER). More broadly, there are no direct flights to Russia from North America, the UK or most of the EU; travellers connect through hubs such as Istanbul, Dubai or Doha and fly on via Moscow to Sochi, then continue by road along the coast. A consular tourist visa must be arranged in advance, foreign bank cards do not work inside the country, and several Western governments, including the US and UK, currently advise against travel to Russia — so check your own government’s guidance before making firm plans.
