The City

Fish Village is a riverside quarter rebuilt in the spirit of old Königsberg, with towers, embankments and a jetty for river-tram cruises along the Pregolya. Beside it, on Kant Island, stands the great Cathedral, a Gothic church begun in the fourteenth century and painstakingly restored after wartime ruin; the tomb of Immanuel Kant lies against its outer wall, and its organ concerts are a highlight of any visit. The leafy Amalienau district preserves the elegant villas of pre-war Königsberg, an open-air lesson in early-twentieth-century German architecture, while Fort No. 11 “Dönhoff,” one of the ring of brick forts built in the 1870s and remarkably well preserved, is now a museum for anyone drawn to military history.

The Coast

The region’s natural wonder is the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a long, thin ribbon of dunes and pine forest between lagoon and open sea, famous for its “Dancing Forest” of twisted trees, the towering Efa Dune, wild beaches and abundant birdlife. It is the finest stretch of the Russian Baltic coast.

Getting There — the Honest Part

As of 2026 there are no direct flights to Russia from North America, the United Kingdom or most of the European Union; travellers connect through hubs such as Istanbul, Dubai or Doha and then fly on domestically, usually via Moscow. A consular tourist visa must be arranged in advance — the eVisa is not open to US, UK, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand passport holders — and foreign Visa, Mastercard and Amex cards do not work inside the country, so you travel on cash. Several Western governments, including the United States and the United Kingdom, currently advise against travel to Russia; check your own government’s guidance before making firm plans.
