Kaliningrad: Königsberg’s Legacy on the Baltic

The leafy Amalienau district preserves the elegant villas of pre-war Königsberg, an open-air lesson in early-twentieth-century German architecture, while Fort No. 11 “Dönhoff,” one of the ring of brick forts built in the 1870s and remarkably well preserved, is now a museum for anyone drawn to military history.

The Coast

The region’s natural wonder is the Curonian Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a long, thin ribbon of dunes and pine forest between lagoon and open sea, famous for its “Dancing Forest” of twisted trees, the towering Efa Dune, wild beaches and abundant birdlife. It is the finest stretch of the Russian Baltic coast.
