Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is often overshadowed by its flashier neighbour Dubai — but that is exactly its appeal. It offers much of the same gleaming modern spectacle with more space, more culture and a slightly calmer pace. Spread along the Gulf coast, it blends futuristic architecture, world-class museums, desert adventure and family theme parks. Here is why it rewards a visit.
1. Landmark architecture. The city’s showpiece is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world, its white marble and reflecting pools genuinely breathtaking. Around it rise futuristic towers such as the curving Etihad Towers.
