The House of Soviets
Before the Second World War there were serious plans to move the Belarusian capital from Minsk to Mogilev, and this grand, pyramid-like government building on Lenin Square — completed in 1940 by the architect Iosif Langbard, who also designed Minsk’s Government House — was built for the purpose. Imposing and monumental, it now houses the regional administration.
The Triumphal Arch
Dating from 1780, Mogilev’s Triumphal Arch is one of the oldest structures in the city. It has been remodelled several times over the centuries, including during the Soviet era, and remains a distinctive landmark in the historic centre.
Mogilev Zoo
A favourite with locals and visitors alike, the Mogilev Zoo spreads over a huge site of some 124 hectares, with unusually large, open enclosures. It is home to around 200 species, including many listed in the national Red Book — but its greatest pride is a family of European bison (zubr), Belarus’s national animal, which you can see in near-natural surroundings.
Buynichi Field and the Simonov Stone
Just outside the city, Buynichi Field was the scene of one of the fiercest battles of 1941, as Soviet forces held off the German advance. The Soviet writer Konstantin Simonov was so moved by it that he asked for his ashes to be scattered here; today a large glacial boulder engraved with his signature marks the spot, beside a memorial complex to the battle.
Getting There — the Honest Part
Mogilev sits in eastern Belarus, and the practical gateway is Minsk (MSQ), about 200 km west. Reaching Belarus from the West is difficult in 2026: there are no direct flights from North America, the UK or the EU, so travellers connect through hubs such as Istanbul or Dubai. A visa is usually required in advance, foreign bank cards do not work inside the country, and several Western governments, including the US and UK, currently advise against travel to Belarus — so check your own government’s guidance first.
