The south coast is the wilder, quieter side, reached over the mountains, where small hotels sit above empty coves and the pace drops right off. Choosing between them is the key decision for any trip.

Beaches and Landscapes

The scenery is the other great draw. In the west, the pink-tinged sands of Elafonissi and the lagoon of Balos are among the most photographed beaches in Greece; in the south, the Samaria Gorge offers one of Europe’s classic day-long hikes, descending sixteen kilometres to the sea. Inland, mountain villages keep the old Cretan traditions — and the famously generous cooking — very much alive.

When to Go

Late spring and early autumn — May, June, September and October — are ideal: warm, uncrowded and perfect for both the beaches and the hiking. July and August are hot and busy but bring the liveliest atmosphere. Even winter is mild by European standards, though many coastal resorts wind down.
